No matter the type, texture or condition of your hair, it can frizz for a number of reasons. Humidity, heat styling, friction, lack of moisture and harsh hair products can all result in a frizzy mane. But that doesn't mean you have to live with out-of-control hair that makes you unhappy.
Read on to learn how hairstylists combat frizz — plus, find out what products you should really be using to help minimize frizz and boost hair wellness.
How Frizz Forms
“Frizz is related to the hair's natural texture,” said New York City hairstylist Jasmine Anna Galazka. "Sometimes, as we age, our texture changes; for example, gray hair is a lot more coarse." And coarse hair is often associated with frizzy hair.
Certain hair types, such as wavy, curly or coily, also tend to be more prone to frizz. The following hair care habits can also cause your hair to become a frizzy mess:
- Showering with too-hot water, using harsh hair products or overwashing your hair can strip your hair of natural moisture and oils, creating dryness or damage and frizz.
- Chemical treatments or color-processing also may damage or dry out the hair, leading to frizz.
- Friction from rough pillowcases, towel-drying or other materials can rough up the cuticle layer, leading to abrasion, breakage, flyaways and frizz.
- Overstyling with high heat tools or using a high-heat blow dryer setting can lead to split ends and frizzy hair.
7 Tips to Tame Frizz
Now that you know what can cause hair to frizz, here are some tips to help prevent and manage unwanted frizz — all without using harsh ingredients or chemical processes.
1. Recalibrate & Restore With Intuitive Care
Eliminate frizz by meeting your hair’s unique needs when you shampoo and condition. ENSO shampoos and conditioners are deeply nourishing, hydrating and tailored to address the specific needs of fine, medium and thick hair. How? ENSO is the first-if-its-kind smart hair care system featuring intuitive technology that instantly adjusts to hair on contact, helping to provide ideal amounts of moisture, volume and protection, while enhancing color and shine.
Additionally, all ENSO formulas include our proprietary Karmatin™, a protective coating that stays attached to the cuticle layer even after rinsing. Karmatin™ bonds to the hair, filling in tiny crevices to give strands an instant, smooth-as-glass feel.
2. Manage Moisture Levels
“Frizz occurs when your hair isn't correctly moisturized; this tends to be about incorrect or lack of product choice,” said Jay Jackson, lead stylist and manager at NV Salon and Spa. "When the hair lacks moisture, it reaches for it in the air, hence our hair being so reactive to different environmental climates. The natural solution would be to keep your hair strands very wet. As crazy as that sounds, it's a great hair hack for vacation.
Provide extra moisture to your hair and prevent frizz, including halo frizz, by choosing products that work with your hair type, avoiding overwashing and skipping the high heat setting while blow-drying.
3. Use a Hair Mask
“The best advice for frizz is to start with a good leave-in conditioner that will hydrate the hair and allow you to seal it with some type of hold product after,” said Jackson. "But, if you skip the leave-in and just go for the hold, then you're more likely going to experience frizz."
Add a weekly deep conditioning mask to your self-care routine to help minimize frizzy hair. The ENSO Overnight Hair Restoring Mask features intuitive technology that instantly adjusts to hair on contact, making the leave-in conditioner the first-of-its-kind to adapt to and address the needs of naturally curly, damaged or coarse hair.
The mask also helps protect heat-damaged and color-treated hair. Plus, it restores the appearance of healthier, stronger-feeling strands while enhancing color and shine. Apply a quarter-sized amount to wet hair — all the way from the scalp to ends. Leave on overnight for up to 10 hours before thoroughly rinsing and styling as usual.
4. Be Mindful When Heat Styling
“Using extra heat like from a flat iron or curling iron after you blow-dry may actually help manage extreme frizz,” explained Galazaka. "But, be mindful, and always use a heat protection product."
Keep hair frizz-free by letting your hair air dry. Or if that's not possible, pair protective products with careful styling when blow-drying and using flat irons or curling irons to combat frizzy hair.
5. Avoid Washing Hair Every Time You Shower
Another trick in fighting frizz: Don’t wash your hair too often. Overwashing can strip hair and potentially alter the hair cuticle or lead to split ends. So don't wash your hair every time you shower. On the days you do wash your hair, use lukewarm water and finish with a cool rinse to smooth down the cuticle, reducing the chances of frizzy hair.
On those in-between days, opt for a plant-based dry shampoo, such as GRO Dry Shampoo, which is volumizing, texturizing and refreshing — the perfect pick for those days when giving your hair a breather.
6. Seek Frizzy Hair Tips From a Stylist
“Almost all types of hair can be frizzy; it really depends on the porosity of the hair itself," said Jackson. "Sometimes damage and static can read as frizz visually, but it's important to know what your hair is actually going through with help from a professional. Make sure to ask your stylist!”
It's also important to see your stylist for regular hair trims so you can get rid of any split ends that occur.
7. Treat Wet Hair With TLC
Wet hair is vulnerable, so never brush it. Instead, always opt to finger comb or use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair or disperse any products.
Use a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel (which beautifully absorbs moisture) when drying your hair. Blot hair; never rub to control frizz.
Further tame frizzy hair with the Good Nights and Hair Days Pillowcase. It's perfect for helping to preserve smoothness, volume and style while you sleep. It features 100% organic bamboo that is soft, gentle and won’t create friction or damage, preventing both flyaways and frizz.
Pair the pillowcase with the Organic Bamboo Cotton Hair Tie Set featuring the same 100% organic bamboo. At night, tie on the ends of two loosely braided pigtails to prevent snags. Bonus: In the morning, you can unravel and wake up to perfectly-imperfect waves; no added styling required.
